RIF.
Until a few weeks ago, I’d have immediately thought of the reading literacy program from my childhood, Reading is Fundamental (which celebrates 60 years this year). Each year in elementary school we would have RIF book fairs where we got to pick out one brand new book for free. And each book would have the RIF logo of an open book with a smiley face and the words Reading is Fundamental stamped inside the front cover.
As of March 31, 2026, RIF has a new connotation for me – one that is not so positive. According to the Google:
A RIF (Reduction in Force) is a permanent elimination of job positions within a company, often due to cost-cutting, restructuring, mergers, or financial hardship.
Unfortunately, this RIF left me without a job. This is the third time I’ve experienced this awful feeling and let me tell you, it doesn’t get any easier each time it happens. It sucks plain and simple. However, I posted my status on LinkedIn and the outpouring of support has been heartwarming and encouraging. I am full of hope for my next opportunity.
I keep thinking of the TV series Luke Cage and the character of Pops, who no matter what happened in life, always looked ahead. His mantra was, “Never backwards. Always forward.” Video clip follows.
